Epik High and f(x) performances at MIDEM 2010 in France

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Creative Content Agency are in charge of publicity for Korean music at the world music festival, MIDEM 2010 in Cannes, France. They have chosen Epik High and f(x) to perform at the event in which musicians from all of the world will be present.

Epik High is planning to work in Europe this year and this is a great opportunity for the group to show Europe their talent. f(x) will represent the girl groups of Asia with their ethnic members and great skills. Both groups will have a showcase at the festival to show off what they’ve got.

France’s Trace TV, international radio RFI and newspaper NICE MATIN have all requested for an interview with both groups. This is definitely going to be an interesting experience since Korean artists usually hit up parts of Asia for oversea promotions, not Europe.

Na Moon Sung of the Korea Creative Content Agency said, “We want to spread Korea’s mainstream music outside of Asia into Europe and America. We hope 2010 will be a year where the hallyu wave will spread further.”

SNSD Wins Nat'l Assembly Award /Crowned Six Melon Music Awards

The pop group Girls' Generation was named singers
of the year by the National Assembly's popular culture and media study society.

The society surveys lawmakers every year to select the National Assembly awards winners
in ten categories in culture and sports.

Other winners announced Tuesday include "Take Off" in the film category,
"Jewel in the Palace" in musicals, "Tears in the Arctic" in TV programs,
Kim Young-im in traditional Korean music, and marathoner
Lee Bong-ju in distinguished contribution.

The awards ceremony will take place next Monday.

At the '2009 Melon Music Awards' SNSD was awarded the 'Odyssey' award.

The ceremony was hosted by Jang GeunSeok. The TOP 10 awards
were pre-elected to include 2PM, Brown Eyed Girls, SNSD, Super Junior,
Kara, 8eight, Davichi and 2NE1. Kim TaeWoo, with his 20th debut anniversary
and the protagonist Lee SeungKi opened an amazing concert along with
the Top 10 award winners.

The winners of many other award categories also attracted great interest.

and last but not least the '2009 Song Award.'

The 'Melon Music Awards' are awarded based on fans through streaming and downloads
numbers and voting through the Melon Music Award site from December of 2008 to
December of 2009. This recovered the issue of the unjust award ceremonies of the past.
The fans were in 100% agreement with the TOP 10, Best Artist, Best Album and all
the other 13 award categories.

Kim Sun-ah walks the pageant runway — and cracks up crew members in the process — for a scene in the upcoming SBS drama City Hall.
In the scene, her character participates in the “Miss Baendaengi Pageant” (and being that a baendaengi is a kind of fish, we can guess the event is not exactly at Miss Korea levels), jumping at a chance at the 20 million won prize ($15,000) to pay off her credit card debt. (No hint yet whether this is before or after her character becomes mayor. I’d vote for before.)

After being selected among the first 100 contenders, Kim’s character then makes the final cut to be among the last 15 standing. As a finalist, she walks the runway with the other competitors, which Kim accomplished with a particularly comic flair. The shoot took place in front of an audience of 400 and Kim shot about 20 takes.
City Hall airs its first episode next Wednesday, April 29. This particular scene will air in Episode 4, which broadcasts on May 7.

Tablo to release English version of “Pieces of You”

Finally after a good run at the Korean bestseller list and clocking sales of up to 70,000 copies from a November release of “당신의 조각들 (Pieces of You)“, Epik High’s “Supreme T” Tablo has announced the arrival of the original English version.The ten short stories compiled from his time spent in the US (1998-2001) were first translated into Korean for the home market. They wrap up the Standford graduate’s life thus far and explore adolescent-vulnerability, as was his situation from his late teens to early twenties.Being the intellectual that he is and having a sensitivity towards his craft - music production - Tablo has confessed his increasing absence at entertainment shows but continuation of his radio show (MBC FM4U Tablo’s Dreaming Radio) as a way to better deliver his passion for music.The English version of “Pieces of You will be on limited circulation. The returning SNSD has revealed the hidden meaning behind their title song “Gee”.
The song “Gee” is about a young girl’s first love and her cute heart as she reacts to it. “Gee” is an expression similar to “Oh my gosh.”
SNSD said “It’s a cute and bright word. The entire song is brimming with energy. It’s so much fun for us to sing the song. It wasn’t easy matching the fast beat and the choreography and the song at the same time but all of us are having fun doing it together. It’s even more fun to see the choreography with the song.”
Moreover, they added “Every night, we clench our teeth and prepare for our comeback performance. Excepting for the time that we eat and sleep, nearly all the other time is spent practicing for it. As soon as our eyes are open, we’re listening to “gee gee gee”. The initial “G” isn’t only for the song but it also signifies SNSD. “G” is the first letter in “Girls Generation”. All five boys: Taemin (SHINee), Seungri (Big Bang), Shindong & Sungmin (Super Junior H), and Jo Kwon (2AM) got back together for none other than the SBS Gayo Daejun Awards.This time around they performed Girls’ Generation’s “Kissing You” and Wondergirls‘ “Nobody” and once again, it looks like the boys have showed the girls up. (Considering neither boys nor girls performed spectacularly.)
If I were any of the girls in these groups, I wouldn’t be cheering them on like the Wondergirls did but I would be worried about my own career. I would especially be worried about Jo Kwon. He’s a little too good at being feminine.

Epik High, “We are touched that the Thai fans are much above our expectations”

Hip hop group Epik High is given the green light for their advance into Thailand. They had their first showcase which saw more than 500 fans and also did about 25 media interviews.

Epik High will be in Thailand Bangkok 4 days from 9th August, which saw the heated response from fans there.

Tablo said over a phone interview, “We went there without much expectation, and it turned out we have a lot of fans here in Thailand. We were shocked when they sang along with us during our showcase performances. We have a tight schedule here, we are not feeling tired and is advancing smoothly.”

They had their outdoors showcase on 10th August in Bangkok Siam Centre which saw about 1000 fans turn up. They performed “Fan” and “Love Love Love”. They also did about 25 media interviews, and was followed up with by about 90 media personnel at the airport and also recognised by 10 media broadcast programs to be asked to perform in them.

Epik High: highest album sales in April

According to the Korean Music Industry Association, Epik High’s 5th album “Pieces, Part One,” which was released on April 17, has sold 54,227 copies in April alone. Based from this record, Epik High’s album currently has the highest number of monthly sales for this year.
As Epik High’s 4th album “Remapping the Human Soul” was able to sell more than 120,000 copies, “Pieces, Part One” is also expected to reach the 100,000 mark soon. “Remapping the Human Soul” sold 47,909 copies 8 days since its release on January 23, 2007 and exceeded 54,000 sold copies in 2 weeks’ time.
Meanwhile, the compilation album “Love Song 2008″ came in 2nd with 23,530 sold copies and was followed by Junjin’s solo album “New Decade” with 20,000 sold copies. Kim Dong Ryul’s 5th album, which came out on January 25, still ranked in the April album sales chart and placed 4th.

Epik High’s entire fifth album was leaked two days before its scheduled released on April 17th. Although album leaks are common in k-pop, Epik High is very upset about it and announced that they are taking all necessary measures to catch the geek responsible for it.

Tae Yeon summarises So Nyeo Shi Dae 8 months of sweat, tears and triumphs

So Nyeo Shi Dae performance on the 13th April edition of SBS Inkigayo marked the end of their first album promotion after first starting in November 2007.

Counting their “Into the New World” CD single released in August 2007, the girls have been promoting non-stop for the past eight months without taking a prolonged rest. In this period, they have charmed many and won many fans from performing on the various music shows like M! Countdown with their hit songs, “Into the New World”, “Girls Generation”, “Kissing You” and “Baby Baby”.
According to the latest sales figures from the Recording Industry Association of Korea (RIAK) yesterday, their 1st album titled “Girls Generation” which was released on November 1 has already sold an accumulated total of 104,092 copies in the five month period. This marks the first time a girl group has managed to accomplish this feat since S.E.S in 2001.

The nine members of So Nyeo Shi Dae has also been active in other areas like appearing on television dramas, variety shows, etc showcasing their charm and talent and winning themselves the moniker of “Korea’s Little Sisters”.
In an interview with Star News yesterday, Tae Yeon said, “We have been chugging along without rest these past few months. Although nervous, the response to our four songs has been better than expected. All the members are also delighted with the support and love from the fans. Maybe it’s because our re-make of Lee Seung Chul’s sunbaenim “Girls Generation” song helped endear us to people in the 30 - 40 age bracket and probably others.”
“We cried a lot like when we got No.1 for “Into the New World” and winning “Best New Artiste” at the year-end awards ceremony. But tears shed then was different compared to the ones when we were lonely and having a hard time during our training. The tears we shed now is filled with love from our fans.”

Tae Yeon also hinted slightly about where So Nyeo Shi Dae source of energy came from and their future plans. “All 9 members including me has been living in a hostel for about a year or more. Hostel life has bought us closer together and we understand each other even more as a result. During our hostel life, we often discuss about problems we encounter in music or on stage and this is a great help to us when we actually perform on stage in future.”
“Although activies for our first album has ended, I will continue to be active as a radio DJ. Other members will continue to appear on screen as actresses in dramas or as emcees on shows. But ultimately, it’s still So Nyeo Shi Dae that’s important to all of us so we hope that everyone will continue to show their support for our new music and performances in future.”

Tv stations in Japan will normally launch slightly weaker dramas for the Spring season. But this has been an exception this year with all major Japanese tv stations pulling out all the stops for Spring season. Even though Fuji TV has managed to get Kimura Takuya, other tv stations are banking on young idols to battle the earlier. It has thus turned into a “New Faces” vs “TV Rating King”.

Her appearance has attracted the attention of many customers who frequented the store. Recently, Chinese entertainment industry has been full of rumors that famous Korean boyband Super Junior will add Zhu Chen Chen- the second Chinese member who will appear this July. SM doesn’t want to make a big noise in public to avoid disorder caused by fans as the case of Henry before. After promotions in Thailand last December 17-19, 2007, FT Island is holding its first promotions in Malaysia from March 27-31. The group is leaving Korea on the 27th and will stay in Malaysia for 5 days and 4 nights.
On the 28th, FT Island will be busy doing media interviews and guestings in 8TV and 98.8FM radio. The next day, a fan meeting and fan signing event will take place.

SS501 Kim Hyun Joong, leg injury

SS501’s comeback in the Korean music scene is facing a challenge because the group’s leader, Kim Hyun Joong, injured his right leg during the rehearsal for SBS “Inkigayo” last March 23. Although not present during the opening of the show, Kim Hyun Joong still performed “Deja vu” with the rest of the group.
Kim Hyun Joong’s leg did not recover completely and he got a check-up today, March 25. According to results, his leg injury was more serious than they thought but he is currently scheduled for an MRI exam. Super Junior is leaving the MC seat of Mnet “MCountdown” after 2 years and 4 months of hosting the said show. The episode on the 27th will be Lee Teuk, Shindong and Eunhyuk’s last day in the show.
Super Junior started hosting the show in November 2005 with members Lee Teuk, Shindong and Kangin then the latter left and Eunhyuk filled in.
According to SM Entertainment, the group’s label, the reason for leaving was because of preparations for their new album and Asian tour.

Actor Lee Dong Gun and actress Kim Sun Ah will play together in a new drama of SBC with the title Everyday Night (provisional translation).

Everyday Night is a comic drama which is about the story of finding a treasure and love of a flirty artist with a loyal homeland girl. After the event of burning Korea treasure Sungyemun in February, MBC decided to build a filming location which is based on the country’s property. In addition, romantic and humorous elements will make the drama more interesting.

CF Queen will always be Yoon Eun Hye’s title as she lands herself on another deal contract in CF industry. Samsung Electronics was searching for a new fresh and vibrant face to represent their premium refrigerator brand, ZIPEL.
Yoon Eun Hye, the selected model, signed a 1 year contract with Samsung Electronics, where she will be the new face for the brand. Cha Im Pyo and Kim Nam Joo were the previous models for ZIPEL.

According to Samsung Electronics’ representative, ” We chose Yoon Eun Hye as our new model because we believe that one of Yoon Eun Hye’s assets is her friendly and familiar on-screen presence which reaches out to all ages.”

The closest thing to a real Korean “world star”

Super(duper) Hallyu star Jang Dong Gun’s recent fanmeeting (scheduled to coincide with his birthday, as many fanmeets do) reportedly attracted fans from — get this — sixteen different countries. Wow. I guess that’s a promising factoid to keep in mind when considering his upcoming role in the Hollywood flick Laundry Warrior (costarring Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush, produced by the people who brought you the Lord of the Rings), for which he just finished filming in New Zealand.
The 36-year-old has returned to Korea for the first time in six months, and held his birthday bash on March 8 (his birthday’s the 7th) in Seoul’s Coex Auditorium; it’s his first fanmeeting in Korea in two years (he did hold one last March in Japan).
In attendance were a thousand fans who came from countries including but not limited to: Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, England, Costa Rica, and Mexico.
From Jang’s Mexican fan club: “I’m so happy to be able to meet Jang Dong Gun in person like this for the first time” and “Jang Dong Gun is really popular in Mexico.”
Jang Dong Gun showed footage he’d taken himself while in New Zealand for filming, which included not only everyday events but also him hanging out with the Hollywood film crew. The event was emceed by Kim Jae Dong, and included guests Sung Shi Kyung, Fly to the Sky, Gong Hyung Jin, Han Jae Seok, Hyun Bin, and Shin Mina.

Girls’ Generation, image model of “X5 DIC”

Popular group Girls’ Generation signed a 1-year contract with mobile multimedia brand “Viliv.” The girls’ advertisements for its PMP (Portable Media Player) “X5 DIC” is planned to be released this April.
“We selected them because of their overflowing personalities, which we feel make them most suited for Viliv’s brand,” an official of Viliv commented on why Girls’ Generation was chosen as the brand’s image model.
Girls’ Generation finished shoots for its outdoor advertisement last March 3 and will be filming for a commercial on the 5th.

Kim Sun Ah leads her Girl Scouts

Check out the newly released promo poster for Kim Sun Ah’s (long-awaited) comeback project, the caper comedy Girl Scouts. She’s had a lot of hold-ups in the three years following her notable role as Samsoon in My Name Is Kim Samsoon, and the article draws our attention to her “perfect S-line” (as though we’d miss it!), having regained her slim curves after gaining anywhere from fifteen to twenty pounds to play overweight Samsoon (who soooo wasn’t even overweight).

Girl Scouts is described as a comedy that unfolds when the four lead women take off to recover the money stolen by the head of their organization, and plans to release in April. It seems like a fun, throwaway film, and it’s got to chafe that in the midst of her legal issues, Kim Sun Ah had for one reason or another given up roles in such hits as the sleeper romantic-comedy 200 Pound Beauty, legal thriller Seven Days (formerly titled Thursday’s Child), and currently popular sports movie The Best Moment of Our Lives.

Honey Lee’s acting debut

Former Miss Korea Lee Ha-nui, otherwise known as Honey Lee, has been busy acting as a television broadcast MC and as a model for various CFs and clothing brands ever since she placed in the finals for last year’s Miss Universe pageant. And now she’s branching out into acting, preparing for her debut — in a musical.
Her rep explained that she’d considered making her acting debut in a drama or film, “but chose a musical in order to showcase her particular skills.” As you may know, she’s a noted classical musician, having majored in traditional music (gayageum, pansori) at Seoul National University. Not only that, she reportedly was in training as a vocalist under YG Entertainment prior to her Miss Korea win. She’ll begin rehearsals for the musical Nanta next week (note: further reading indicates that Nanta is somewhat loosely referred to as a musical; it’s more accurately described as “non-verbal performance,” conveying its message via music, dance, and movement, while incorporating a fair amount of traditional folk music elements).

Actor-singer Lee Seung Gi broke a finger on the 23rd while filming his segment for the popular Happy Sunday variety program, and underwent surgery. Although he doesn’t think the injury is overly serious, he’ll most likely have stop his broadcast activities for the immediate future. Aw.

Actress and former Baby VOX popstarlet Yoon Eun Hye is singing for the first time in a long while since she left pop music to transition into a successful acting career. She lends her vocals to “I Love You,” the debut single for new rap duo Mighty Mouth (oops, not Mighty Mouse like I thought, which woulda been kinda more awesome) — but insists this does not indicate a return to her singer status.
After the recent massive oil spill, reports of local residents going so far as to commit suicide because of their troubles have reached a sympathetic Bada, who was moved by the people’s plight and is putting together a charity concert in the name of reviving the local economy of Mallipo Beach in western Korea.

Seems like Rain is in the news constantly for one reason or another — and now it’s because apparently the Chinese netizens are angry again. First it was over his participation in singing Samsung’s Olympics theme song — ’cause you know, the only people allowed to sing at any particular Olympics are the citizens of the country hosting it. Now they’re calling him “arrogant” because he turned down Chinese Olympics ambassador (and gold-medalist gymnast) Liu Xuan’s request for a song at an Olympics promotion press conference due to time constraints; they’re saying, “Liu Xuan was dishonored internationally” and “How long would it have taken to sing a few lines?” and “Koreans are impatient and give no leeway so they really seem rude often.” Ahh, nothing like the Olympics to foster discontent. Whatever happened to international harmony, fraternity, and the symbolic Olympic rings?

It’s common knowledge that actresses Han Ji Hye and Han Ye Seul are good friends — but who knew they’re also too good to mingle with the masses? Apparently the two go out clubbing — no drinks, just dancing — twice a year: once on each of their birthdays. Actor Lee Chun Hee recalled on a soon-to-air episode of Sang Sang Plus seeing the two at a club before they were famous, dancing together and ignoring any male attempts to approach them. Asked why, Han Ji Hye said that before their debuts, it was because “we had pride.” Afterward, it was because “we knew we were going to be actresses so we decided not to party with anyone else, just dance with the two of us.” Hm, I’m trying to figure out a way to interpret her answer as anything but bratty and stuck-up. Someone tell her pride and ego are different things.

Fly to the Sky as Guardian Angels

On February 22, Fly to the Sky acted as guardian angels of the day, to almost 30 orphans in Thailand.Don't get me wrong, the singing duo didn't go to Thailand to act as good Samaritans - they were actually there for a fan meeting concert, scheduled on February 23 at the Bangkok Central World Convention Center.But, despite going to Thailand for the fans, the duo initially did a good deed by spending time with the orphans at an orphanage just outside of Bangkok.The singers gave out t-shirts and souvenirs, and also gave them a mini-concert."Things may be hard now," the boys told the orphans. "But never forget how to smile."

A look at SBS’s upcoming “I Love You”

SBS’s current Monday-Tuesday drama, sageuk King and I, is coming to a close, and moving to replace it is the upcoming drama billed as “a lively and sweet love story for a different, new-generation couple,” I Love You. The romantic-comedy series is based on a manhwa of the same name, whose creator also wrote the manhwa upon which the upcoming drama Gourmet is based. Following in the newer trend, the 16-episode drama has already finished filming, meaning its production will have completed well before its premiere date in March.

Starring are Ahn Jae Wook (Oh Pil Seung Bong Soon Young, Star in My Heart) and Seo Ji Hye (Over the Rainbow) in a somewhat mismatched pairing — he’s 36 (counting by Western standards), she’s 23 — although the unlikeliness of the couple is part of the point. Her naive 21-year-old bank employee character meets his 35-year-old comic-book-writer character on the subway, and mistakes his behavior for harassment. Thus begins their relationship, which complicates when she becomes pregnant and he’s less than thrilled about it.

Also cast are Hwan Hee of pop ballad duo Fly to the Sky in his second acting gig (his first was alongside Seo Ji Hye in Over the Rainbow), who’ll be paired with new actress Park Hye Young, as well as philandering lawyer husband Gong Hyung Jin (who played philandering Sae Do from Dal Ja’s Spring) and his long-suffering wife, Jo Mi Ryung.

The drama differs from its original source — the manhwa starts with the couple’s marriage, whereas the drama starts pre-wedding — and handles such issues as premarital pregnancy, abortion, cheating, and other sex-related topics “in a light fashion.” Ahn Jae Wook explains, “If the topic of premarital pregnancy is treated overly seriously, the drama becomes less like a light show that can be watched with family and more like a documentary.” Seo Ji Hye adds: “Filming this drama has made me think lots of happy fantasies of married life, and it makes me want to get married.”

Hmm, I’m on the fence about this one. I’m all for a light-hearted series, but Seo Ji Hye and Ahn Jae Wook seem such an awkward pairing — which I know is the point — that I’m not sure how I’ll like it. And I haven’t really enjoyed anything SBS has put out recently — their series have nice acting and nice moments but the ones I’ve seen recently tend to the low-stakes, low-tension end of the spectrum.

On the Valentine occasion, Sohu website of China gave a list of 14 charming Korean men and did a poll named "Who do you love?".Up to 10am on February 18, it had 257.264 participations joined this poll.As the result,

Korea's lovely 'Coffee Princess' Chae Jung Ahn and 'Fashion Runway' model Heidi Klum face-off in this backless, sparkly, Ferragamo mini dress. Both beauties have their similarities; long wavy hair and a complementing tall thin frame. However, the dress just seems to fit Chae Jung Ahn better, her hair is perfect, and the pink ribbon clinching in her waist shows off her figure very well. I like the way Heidi Klum paired off the dress with a metallic stilleto, but the black strap shoes worn by Chae Jung Ahn looks like a good contrast. It's always hard going up against a 'Sports Illustrated' cover model but Chae Jung Ahn rocked the dress better than Heidi Klum. Miss Che Jung Ahn rightfully takes the place as the new fashion goddess.
